Following Gigaclear’s success in winning the broadband battle in the Cotswolds and Essex, the ultrafast, pure fibre broadband provider, has now also won the contract to deliver its broadband network in West Berkshire as part of the Superfast Berkshire Project.
Gigaclear’s ultrafast, broadband service offers speeds up to 1000x faster than are currently available. Upload and download speeds of up to 1Gb (1000Mps) are available; 40x faster than the UK average. With more than £3.7M of public funding invested in this phase of the project, West Berkshire will exceed 99% superfast coverage by the end of 2017.
This contract will turn some of the most difficult to reach communities across West Berkshire into the best-connected broadband areas in the world. For instance, with Gigaclear’s ultrafast broadband a three hour feature film can be downloaded in 1 minute, 23 songs can take less than 10 seconds to download, and 200 photos less than 10 seconds to upload!
This project is the first to be awarded in Berkshire to an alternative operator to BT, under the government-subsidised BDUK programme, which aims to bring broadband of at least 24Mbps to 95% of the UK. Gigaclear will invest more than £4 for every £1 of state aid, contributing nearly £16 million to transform the online experience for all those living in this area.
Gigaclear’s pure fibre network will put in place a new, open fibre communications infrastructure in parallel to the existing copper network. This reliable, symmetric and ultrafast network will be essential for small businesses and those working in the creative sector to operate at their full potential, and for residents and families to enjoy the full entertainment, work, communications, learning and gaming capabilities provided over the Internet.
Roger Croft, West Berkshire’s Executive Member for ICT said: “Broadband is vital to the rural economy as well as rural residents quality of life. This is the next phase of bringing superfast broadband to residents and small businesses in West Berkshire following completion of the commercial areas. The impending completion of Phase 1 and this new contract with Gigaclear will mean that more than 99% of premises in West Berkshire will have superfast broadband capability. I am looking forward to working with Gigaclear to bring West Berkshire residents, rural schools and businesses the broadband service that people need and want in today’s world. ”
Matthew Hare, Chief Executive, Gigaclear, said: “We’re delighted to celebrate a hat-trick of successes in being selected to bring ultrafast broadband to the Cotswolds, Epping Forest in Essex and now West Berkshire. Giving these areas one of the best and most reliable broadband services in the world means businesses and residents of all ages will benefit. We are excited that these investments will make a significant contribution to economic development as well as transforming the online education, communications, entertainment and business experience.”
