26th June 2015; Gigaclear, the ultrafast, pure fibre broadband provider, has won the contract to deliver its broadband network, with upload and download speeds of up to 1Gb (1000Mbps), across the Cotswolds as part of Herefordshire and Gloucestershire’s ‘Fastershire’ project. This means that almost 6,500 homes and businesses will benefit from Gigaclear’s ultrafast, broadband service with speeds up to 1000x faster than are currently available, and up to 40x faster than the UK average. Construction work for this £10 million project will commence in September 2015, with the aim of making the first customers live before Christmas.

This contract will bring some of the most difficult to reach communities including Guiting Power, Chedworth, Whelford, Bibury and Icomb across the Cotswolds into the best-connected broadband areas in the world. This project is the first to be awarded to an alternative operator rather than BT under the government-subsidised BDUK programme to bring broadband of at least 24Mbps to 95% of the UK. Gigaclear will invest more than £2 for every £1 of state aid. A £7 million investment from Gigaclear and a combined £3 million from the County Councils and BDUK through the Fastershire Superfast Extension Programme will transform the online experience for all those living in this area.

Gigaclear’s pure fibre network will put in place a new fibre communications infrastructure in parallel to the existing copper network. This reliable, symmetric and ultrafast network provided by Gigaclear will be essential for small businesses to operate at their full potential and for residents and families to enjoy the full entertainment, work, communications, learning and gaming capabilities provided over the Internet.

Cllr Mark Hawthorne, leader of Gloucestershire County Council, said: “Fastershire is proud to be working on such a scale with Gigaclear, in a contract that is the first of its kind in the UK which will deliver fantastic value for money for the counties and bring transformational broadband to residents and businesses across the Cotswolds”

John Scott, one of the Chedworth Broadband Champions said: “Having been campaigning for several years to have better broadband in our area, we are now, thanks to Fastershire and Gigaclear, to have the fastest broadband in the country which will, at last, provide a world class internet platform to support our rural Cotswold business users, schools and homes.”

Matthew Hare, Chief Executive of Gigaclear, said: “Great broadband unleashes our creative potential. Our job here at Gigaclear is to deliver the communications infrastructure needed to let homes and business have the broadband they want. We do that by building an all new pure fibre network designed for great broadband. And with a fibre to every property in the Cotswolds, we are sure that we will deliver what’s demanded today, tomorrow and far into the future.
